Long Beach Superheroes
About Us
We’re just a team of people who are working our way out of the hole of homelessness with purpose, daily volunteerism, and help from friends.
Care Closet LBC
At a glance: we’re a non-profit who takes our work directly to the unhoused and those challenged with reforming themselves to become members of society as a whole. We do that daily by cleaning, and laboring in volunteerism shoulder to shoulder with our unhoused brothers and sisters in the City of Long Beach.
Our Vision
Our vision is to create a community where every individual has the opportunity to rebuild their life with dignity, purpose, and hope. We envision a Long Beach where the unhoused are empowered through meaningful volunteer opportunities, comprehensive career training, and consistent support. By fostering a sense of responsibility and belonging, we aim to transform lives and neighborhoods, making our city a cleaner, safer, and more compassionate place. Our ultimate goal is to see individuals not just surviving, but thriving, as they transition from the streets to secure living situations, new career paths, and fulfilling, purpose-driven lives. Together, we can build a future where homelessness is not just addressed but eradicated, creating a brighter, more inclusive Long Beach for all.
Our Goal
Our goal is to cultivate a culture of compassion and responsibility, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to contribute to and thrive within our vibrant community. We are dedicated to eliminating homelessness by providing the essential tools and resources needed for lasting change. Through meaningful volunteer opportunities, career training, and consistent support, we aim to empower individuals to transform their lives. Together, we strive to create a Long Beach where everyone can rebuild their lives with dignity and purpose, ultimately eradicating homelessness and fostering a more inclusive and brighter future for all.
Shaping
The Way
We aspire to be the benchmark for cities facing significant homelessness challenges, demonstrating how to inspire those who are unhoused with purpose and hope. Our goal is to transform Long Beach into a model of compassion and effective support to provide a meaningful future for all.
Care Closet's awareness of the issue with homelessness in Long Beach
We can’t remake the wheel, and as a single unit, we can’t solve homelessness in Long Beach. That’s not our mission.
What we do believe in is reformation of self, rediscovering the special feeling of daily consistency; that’s how our mission works, it’s the volunteerism of labor and caring for one’s city, one’s personal surroundings, and one’s own life.
This ethic has led to many life-changing opportunities for our unhoused volunteers; opportunities such as job placements with Long Beach City Services for multiple Care Closet veterans, housing with special circumstances, and donated cars given to our volunteers who go above and beyond.
We’re hoping to start placing bids on property in Long Beach that will allow us to house our own village of heroes who are daily striving to create a cleaner Long Beach, showing love to our streets, and ensuring that our children are in clean neighborhoods they can be proud of.
One person at a time, lil by lil.
From Dream to Reality
In 2019 Sylvester Givens (known widely as Duke) had a reoccurring dream about helping the unhoused. It continued to hit home as he watched the City he loved beginning to change, to shift into something he didn’t recognize; unhappy with that changing landscape, he got started on something he knew well enough: any job worth doing starts with a good cleaning.
That is the beginning of Care Closet as we know, and has been a major staple since its inception.
